Hi, Pat. I also want to welcome you to Iris-talk--and to Iris-
photos. Here's the link:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/iris-photos
The procedure for joining is the same as on Iris-talk, and the rules
are the same, too. If you go back through the entries in both these
forums you will find a lot of information, pictures, advice and
opinions you may find helpful.
I live in the mountains north of you in a similar but cooler climate
near Asheville. My soil is a red clay that, unless amended, is awful
to work, sticky, lifeless and dense. Lots of organics, lime and
GYPSUM are useful. I also have to remove tons of rock--the beds run
about 30% rock as I prepare them. One source of organics you might
check out is Alfalfa pellets, available from farm supply stores. You
may have Southern States in your area. Even though others may have
lower prices on fertilizer or pellets, they do stock good quality and
keep things on hand. Their fertilizer prices are better than Wal-
Mart, and the service is better, too.
One source of organics I've used which has caused me grief is a wood
industry by-product of ground up bark, roots and such. Even
composted for a time it makes most plants sick until it breaks down--
which takes months to a year or more. It also eats up nitrogen.
Many folks around here are growing Japanese and Siberian irises.
They are quite a bit better adapted to our area than Tall Beardeds
are--and have fewer diseases and pests. An on-line source for both
you might enjoy browsing is Iris City Gardens near Nashville, and
Ensata Gardens. Both links are in the www.irises.org American Iris
Society page of links.
Linda Mann is a tremendous source of information for your kind of
environment, and I hope you continue to enjoy her comments as much as
I do. She is one of many such on this forum. Again I
offer "Welcome!"
