I'm not as quick to dismiss the idea of selection increasing/decreasing the amount of plb. There may be something to it. From my own experience with variagated foliage, selection makes a huge difference. With Canadian Streaker there can be very large differences between plants and selection certainly was necessary to help increase the amount of streaking. The same thing with other variagated foliage plants. Why not the same thing with plb. It could be much the same thing, a factor in the endosperm rather thenin the genes.
Does anyone know of a case where plb was passed on to a plant via the pollen parent? Variagated foliage is only passed on through the pod parent.
I have done a little work with this but havn't kept as close a watch as I should.
