HYB: Purple Leaf Base

> From: irischapman@netscape.net

pollen parent? Variagated foliage is only passed on through the pod parent.

Chuck,

From earlier discussions on this list I gather that it is generally agreed
that Purple Base Foliage (pbf), or Purple Leaf Base (plb), is transmitted
via chromosomal inheritance as a simple Mendelian dominant effect. That is
certainly how it has behaved in crosses I have made. For example, in
reciprocal crosses between GNUS FLASH (non-pbf) and TENNESSEE WOMAN (pbf)
almost exactly half the seedlings showed pbf whether TW was the pollen or
pod parent. This is almost as good as Mendel's peas, assuming that TW
carries a single dose of pbf. Of course, there must be additional modifying
factors affecting the overall expression of pbf given the observed wide
variation in extent, intensity, and persistency of the purple leaf
pigmentation.
