Jeff, this is very useful information.

Mel Suiter's OCHOCO, a half-sib to TOMECO, had pbf that extended a
third the way up the fan and was intense in color. At the other
extreme, Keppel's HAPPENSTANCE has just a touch of violet pigment in
the base of the fan. We could assume that we're dealing with the
same single-gene dominant in both cases, modified by other factors.

Another possibility is that pbf is as complex as many TB
characteristcs, perhaps involving an allelic series as in plicatas.

There has been enough interest over the years in developing
decorative foliage colors in iris--mixtures of variegation and
anthocyanins--that speculation and work in these genetics is
certainly worthwhile. At one time Gordon Plough was keenly
interested both in pbf and in the colors showing up on bloomstalks
and spathes in some varieties, but I have no idea what became of his
interest.
