Dave, When I was selling iris I would sometimes try to give irises to people 
and they refused saying they wouldn't grow well if they were a gift!  Don't 
know how these things got started.  

What Mike experienced though was people talking all of the plant, not just 
part of it. 

Isn't it against the law to take some native plants from their wild state?  I 
suspect some of the native iris might fall into that category.
