I sowed Signa seeds from 2000 along with some crosses I made on
rebloomers in January in a friends greenhouse. Actually he buys
the rhizomes, pots them and carries them over in unheated
greenhouses. I mess around with the iris. I got four pods and the
seeds looked good.
A goodly number of the Signas germinated; not 100% but a well
worthwhile effort. None of the crosses germinated. I don't know
if the seed was not viable or I gave the seeds insufficient cooling
in the frig. I kinda lean toward insufficient cooling time, just
couldn't wait. I figured an average winter would add to the cooling
period.
We had a warm winter with temps dropping below 10 degrees maybe
ten times(?). I potted up the germinations in 4" pots. I will bring
the non-germinations pots closer to the house and just wait another
year.
Within reason I've got time on my hands as the Doc says. Then again,
I saved an article that says the careless Docs are ahead of the guns
ten to one.
If the old framers saying of "one year weeds and seven years seeds"
is true I've got 6 tries to go. ;>)
