<Does our self-proclaimed rot queen have any observations on this?>
Who, me? I was dubbed, not self-proclaimed <g>.
I'm thinking.....
In general, I think rot starts in damaged tissue and spreads to weakened
tissue. Tissues are weakened & damaged lots of ways - suffocated
(drowned) roots, gnawed rhizomes, chewed leaves, frozen & ruptured
tissue in rapidly growing leaves etc. Damage is repaired by mechanisms
that require translocation of materials - it all boils down to carbon
(sugars, hormones, amino acids & nucleic acids). So there might be two
strikes against the iris plant in soggy soil with its leaves chewed off
- no 'pump' to remove water from the soil immediately around the roots
and no ability to fix carbon to make repairs to damaged tissues.
