The color depends on the part of the country you are in.
Here in Wisconsin, it is brown, light brown, or black. You
will know it when you can dig a hole a foot deep, fill it
with water, and it takes an entire day to drain. Ugly stuff
- but my grandmother contended that Irises love clay. The
reason? Since they have to be planted at ground level, the
clay grabbed the rhizomes and held on tight. The only time
I've ever lost an iris was in well amended, loose soil.
