For example: I have a name in mind for a new seedling I want to introduce.
Can I call the registrar and have him do a search to see if this name has
been used or do I have to look myself through all the years of R&I books? >>

Kelly,
I am surprised that nobody has answered this. Although a Registration
Book is put out for each year, there is a Checklist up to 1939, then ten year
checklists for each decade there after, which makes searches easier. I have
them up to 1989, but the 1999 is now out. It would be better to have a check
to make sure the names are not taken first.
