This year my new flowerbeds were full of pillbugs/sowbugs, and they chewed
big holes in the base of a number of rhizomes, causing a fair amount of rot.
Well, nature seems to be taking care of things. With the recent hot weather
the number of pillbugs seems to be reduced, but this may also be related to
the increasing number of "bluebelly" lizards that have appeared in my
garden. Some of the lizards are missing tails; that might have something to
do with the cats my neighbor owns. I also wish people could control their
own animals. Cat poop on a lawn is nasty, and last week I came home to find
my daughter upset by the 1/4 of a rabbit (two legs, a tail, and part of a
ribcage) in pieces on our patio. She thinks rabbits are cute, and unlike
the cats it hadn't done any noticeable damage to the yard or anything in it.
I don't blame the cat, just the owners. Unfortunately, just as hunting and
killing is instinctive for a cat, irresponsible behavior comes naturally to
some cat owners.
