Re: CULT: Rot - retention/persistence in soil?

Thanks to all who responded to my query (Donald, Linda, Walta, Bill).
Maybe because I am a bit lazy, I prefer the opposite of Bill's
philosophy - "it's better to take no action than some actions" :-) (I
fit right in here in the Ozarks where leaks in the roof can't get fixed
because the thinking is that you can't fix it in the rain and if it's
not raining, it's not leaking!)

I'm going to hold off on the terraclor until I see if this remains a
problem in future years. The amount of rain and length of time that
rhizomes remained wet this spring was really quite abnormal for here, so
I am going to see if the rot problem becomes recurring here first in
more "normal" years.

I try not to be a fanatic about it, but I haven't had to use any
chemical pesticides, insecticides, or herbicides on my place in the 22
years that I have lived here. I really believe that practice extended
for so long (coupled with my remote location from other people -
thousands of acres of Conservation woodlands on three sides and nearest
neighbor 1/2 mile through the woods on the fourth side) has resulted in
such a healthy balance in my mini-ecosystem that I don't have the insect
and disease problems that many folks do. Naturally, I am hesitant to
break that tradition. Nevertheless, I am a realist and I'll do what I
have to do if this rot becomes recurrent. (I have finally had to resort
to some additional chemical fertilizers this year, since I no longer
have livestock to provide manure).

I'm going to replant in those same spots with less valuable cultivars
after adding some additional soil to elevate the spot just a bit for
even better drainage. If the results are detectable, I'll let you all
know how it works.

Thanks again,
Bill Wells (who planted a few more this morning, but the bag is still
hefty, and this is only the first of several orders this year :-)
