Re: Grasshopper Control

Hi Tom:
I have used Nosema Locustae several times with GREAT success when I
lived in Arkansas. I remember it was rather expensive, nearly $20 for a
lb.of the product which contained 1 billion spores. It is a naturally
occurring disease of some 58 species of grasshoppers and some crickets. It's
mixed with wheat bran and I broadcast it by hand around the perimeter of my
garden(s). One of the instructions was that the grass/weeds be kept cut all
around the area to eliminate breeding/hiding places. Once it is ingested by
the grasshoppers, they eat less and finally die. The disease will spread to
other grasshoppers through natural cannibalism. If I remember correctly, it
lasts for 3-5 years. . .What I DO remember was that IT WORKED. Within a
period of time (don't recall what that was) corpses (grasshopper!) were all
over the place!
