Hi,
(I'm just joining in - so I hope I'm not repeating something already said or a fact which is well known) But here is my viewpoint or answer to your question about selling to non-members - as well as another idea so rhizomes wouldn't have to go to waste.
(First the idea) I belong to TAIS (Tucson Area Iris Society). When we have leftover iris from our sale - us members are asked to take some of the rhizomes home with us........... along with the same number of (empty) one gallon pots (provided by/donated to the club). A list of names with the amount of rhizomes each person takes home - are kept by the one in charge of the project. These iris are then potted up and cared for till Spring by the members. (this too is alittle extra work) Then come spring - - at our annual show - - the potted iris are all brought in. The best part: Many of these potted iris are blooming so people know exactly what named iris/ and what colors they are buying. It's quite a popular event. The potted iris are then sold for between $5.00 -$7.00 each.
All of our sales (Fall and Spring) are open to the public: to members and non-members alike. So yes we sell to non-members. I may be wrong, but I'm thinking most all clubs do. In the process our club earns money. In many cases non-members do eventually sign up to become members of AIS and TAIS. Yet others do not. No big deal.
To answer your question - - "selling rhizomes thru mail to non-members" would be no different. I see no reason why anyone would object to selling iris to non-members. It boils down to people helping people. Iris lovers reaching out to other iris lovers.
TAIS has never even thought about selling rhizomes through the mail. But, I'll be sure to share this idea with them. I think it's a great idea and worth looking into!
