Subject: To continue this important thread:
Iris-talk and all of the contributors, as well as the "sister-brother" e-mail
lists are a wealth of information and ideas to all iris publication editors.
At the Memphis AIS convention, there were many informal (and some very late
night) discussions among editor-types like Bruce Filardi (AIS), Ellen
Gallagher (Siberian), Nyla Hughes (Median),Tom & me (Japanese & TBIS), Mike &
Anne Lowe (HIPS), and faithful contributors such as Dave Silverberg, Dennis
Hager and a multitude of others bouncing off ideas and content suggestions
for the various publications. This, for me who is a night-owl to begin with,
was the most fun of the whole convention! I was a little bleary-eyed for the
7 AM bus tours, but no matter.
We, the editors, have certain constrictions, of what MUST be included but
basically we are all looking for the items Ellen mentioned (1) readable 2)
useful 3) fun to read 4) attractive 5) also have something for everyone (!)
6) have all this fit into the budget (my big worry these days since colored
pics = $$$). We all want the publications to appeal to a fair cross-section
of our members and encourage letters, e-mails and articles from any and all
of you. When a particularly interesting thread, controversy or idea comes
up, we REALLY want to explore it and have been known to shamelessly ask for
contributions to our publication (me especially!).
Granted, membership in any organization is not just for the publication but
membership contributions (both in articles and feedback) is very important in
meeting the needs and interest levels of that publication. Even the
published "e-mail robin" condensation, though maybe inaccurate at times,
gives those NOT on the robin an idea of what is being discussed and may spark
new interest.
My point is, in case I lost it in all these words, SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL
EDITOR!! Whether national, section or local (I do one of those also), send
your compliments, picks & pans, new ideas and articles to make the whole
process more useful to you! If we don't hear, we don't know! And my sincere
thank you to all (you know who you are!) who have contributed or are in the
process of doing articles on many levels and topics. Many new names and new
ideas -- you are great!
Also to the volunteer editors -- thanks and ask for double your $0 salary!
Even if I, or any of you, disagree with the opinion or topic, the discussions
are interesting OR you can hit the delete button!
As Keith Mc Names, AIS Librarian, always signs his e-mails:

voles!

little better. <<<<<

Doreen,
When I first read this, I thought there was a new iris mag. on the
market. Sadly, membership in AIS is often thought to be a
subscription to the Bulletin. (the same with most plant societies or
just orgs. in general)
I am sensitive to that point since I am the Editor of a section
publication of AIS, 'The Siberian Iris'. I am working on my fourth
issue since taking on this volunteer position and every time I plan
an issue, the overriding thought is how to make this issue: 1)
readable 2) useful 3) fun to read 4) attractive 5) also have
something for everyone (!) 6) have all this fit into the budget (my
big worry these days since colored pics = $$$)
AIS has a fine bulletin editor in Bruce Filardi (and a terrific
person to boot).I know he is committed to serving the AIS membership
and he makes each issue unique and every issue is better than the
last. I think the balance between 'technical' and non-technical (pics
+ human interest) is just about right, IMO.
Try AIS membership again....I think it is a bargain plus iris people
are great. :-)
Cheers,
Ellen
p.s. The 'something for everyone' is the biggest hurdle for editors.
Ask my friend Rita Gormley who edits TWO iris publications. :-)
