Hi All,
If you would not mind some observations and opinions from someone
who is new and does not know the history, then please read on.
When I first became seriously interested in the Iris, I did not
know about all the different types of Iris. The only ones I knew
about was the Common (Bearded), Siberian and Dutch. I did not even
know the difference between the flowers. I did know two were rhizomes
and one was a bulb. In order to learn more, I started with the Garden
Web Iris forum did many Internet searches and purchased several three
Iris books. In my research, I discovered all the wonderful varieties
and "lo and behold" there were some that would rebloom. Thus, I
joined the RIS because they would best serve my interests.
I am sure that I am not the only new person to make such a
choice, nor will I be the last. Therein lies the transition I see
occuring in the World of the Iris. I may be opening a can of worms
but I believe that this is the trend of people in general. As with
me, they want only the information for what they are interested in
growing. So, they will tend to join the special interest group before
they will join the general organization and this will continue as
long as people have that choice. AIS chose to not require membership
in AIS as a requirement to joining a special interest group. With
this decision, it appears to me that AIS chose to be dedicated to all
varieties/species and as such should promote each one equally. Thus,
becoming a "clearing house" for each special interest group and
passing on the information to someone who is new to the world of the
Iris.
Now, my questions are "Why does AIS continue to poll the TB when
there is a TBIS?" and "Why does AIS not include the polls from other
groups of Iris?" I don't even remember how I found out about the RIS
checklist and poll. It seems to me that all Iris people would be
better served if AIS would collect the polls from each special
interest group and dedicate one publication a year to all of the
polls/popularity contests. Thus, the AIS would then truly be an equal
opportunity Iris society.
For what it is worth, knowing I could be way off base. :)
