Leafy twigs (sugar maple, ash, boxelder, etc...).  & there's a caveat -
either use small twigs that will rot away by the following spring, or
gather them all before spring weeds start.  Nothing like a nice mat of
chickweed or henbit all tangled with little sticks enmeshed with tender
spring iris growth. :-(

Sort of like reinforcement rods for concrete...
