I have always prefered to sacrifice fall bloom, if possible, in favor of a
healthy transplant. However, I've never gone to the extreme of cutting out a
stalk if it choses to appear. <g>
Storage: You can place the plants in a cool dry place until later in the
season. I've heard that hanging them upside down helps prevent rot in
storage (moisture drains) but I've not tried this method. Just watch for
bugs. Things like white fly.
If you feel you MUST plant you can go a couple of different ways.
1) <<<<As long as they are not in the sun, even the black plastic nursery
stock pots are fine. Once your iris are actively rooted and growing well,
the whole ball can be transplanted from the pot.>>> (from John) This way has
worked really well for me. I use regular potting mix straight from the bag.
A good one. I'll do this from now on.
2) You can plant in the garden but provide shade. An upturned pot, the
black plastic ones above even work, will work if nothing else is available.
The black may build up too much heat but it keeps the bleaching rays of the
sun off the defenseless foliage of the iris until it can take root. I speak
from experience during the horrific summer of 95. Linda uses twigs, but I
have more pots than anything else.
Betty Wilkerson Zone 6 SouthCentral Kentucky who had been known to dig clumps
and pot to extend fall bloom . . . but not lately.
