Connie: I always place my orders early (I hate sellouts) and receive them
early (at the same time so I can order markers after I see the extras. I
potted everything last weekend in 5-gallon pots, which I keep in an area
where it is shaded in the afternoon from the sun in the 95-degree heat. I
water them thoroughly after potting, then at most once a week (I keep the
pot very damp but the top 2" relatively dry. This dryout cycle helps to
prevent rot while the iris settle in; the shade does the same and pevents
them from drying out; the roots love the good planting mix (very fine
ground, but not light like potting soil or manure-laden). When it drops to
around 80-degrees in October, I will move them into the ground. This is
southern California culture for all iris; not encessarily yours, but it
might help if it seems too hot right now. Do NOT use clay pots; they will
fry. As long as they are not in the sun, even the black plastic nursery
stock pots are fine. Once your iris are actively rooted and growing well,
the whole ball can be transplanted from the pot.
