The terminology might be confusing re using the 'AIS checklist' = the
Symposium of TBs. The checklist is a very different kettle of fish.

I also dislike the term Symposium for the Popularity Poll...I looked
up the definition and our little poll is not a Symposium unless we
went to use it as a forum to discuss the merits of each cultivar. :-)

The AIS section, 'The Society for Siberian Irises' has for some time
be hosting it own 'popularity poll' for Siberian irises every two
years. We are doing it annually and the results are published in 'The
Siberian Iris' and also is available on the SSI web pages maintained
by Jim Wilson. There is a link (or should be) on the AIS web pages to
it.

We ALWAYS use a blank ballot (I know because I typed and sent out the
one in 2001). The 2002 ballot was IN the spring issue of The Siberian
Iris. No more than 15 irises are allowed - there are 15 slots. As a
practical matter, many folks regularly vote for only 10. Some old,
some new and lots in between.

****We also accept Popularity Poll ballots by e-mail (I know that
also since they come to me.) More and more people are choosing this
way to cast their ballot. Only members of The Siberian Society can
vote which is why they are sent in the pub. or sent separately to the
membership.

This year was the first year we instituted e-mail balloting and more
people are choosing this convenient way to vote. The e-mail ballots
are sent to me and I compile them and send them onto to another
person who combines the snail mail ballots plus the e-mail ballots
and does an article on the results and she then send it on to me for
editing for the publication.

A large part of our Popularity Poll centers on the comments that the
voters make on their ballots. In the spring issue, 10 pages were
devoted to the P.Poll results - a long article but an important one
to us.

Cheers,

Ellen
