Rust has been found from Canada to Florida. The fungus actually produces two
types of spores. One of which is wind born. The malady is not life
threatening to the plant though it is visually unattractive. The fungus
actively grows between temperatures of 43 degrees and 94 degrees Fahrenheit.
Above or below these levels growth is inactive. The malady is chemically
controllable with Heritage, a systemic, being the most effective in its
control/eradication. Daconil Ultrex (contact) is an effective preventative in
cases where infection has not occurred. Plants can harbor the fungus and show
no external indications of its presence.
If one wishes to prolong the inevitable, it is seems more important to make
purchases from growers who take action to control/eradicate than from garden
that perport to not have visual manafestation of the fungus (opinion and
advice).
My current perspective is that rust is similar to leaf spot in irises in its
effect. While I do not currently have rust, I fully expect someday to garner
the priviledge while taking action to prolong the inevitable.
Johnson Grass grows well here and is remarkably impervious to all known
maladies,
