To Dave:
To me, it sounds like you might have a drainage problem. Louisiana
has kind of moist wet soil, no?
That is probably why they do not sell iris where you are.
Check around your neighborhood. Do other yards in your area have
bearded iris growing in them? If not, then there may be a problem
with growing them directly in the ground.
Growing iris in pots can eliminate drainage problems.
I am not sure if you are growing in pots or ground, but pots can help
with drainage and rot. Just make sure you do not have a saucer of
water standing under the pot. For the soil in the pot, I use a
mixture of commercial potting soil, a little compost, like rotted
leaves or wood, and some sand. Mix together but set the rhizome on
top, and press the roots in firmly. If I'm desperate, I will use some
garden soil, but 100% garden dirt is no good.
It appears that beardeds go thru leaf growth spurts in the spring and
then in the late summer. So not seeing much leaf growth at this time
is not critical, as long as whatever leaf is sticking up out of the
soil is firm and not completely dying away.
Also check the consistency of the rhizome; is it firm like a fresh
potato? (that is good), or if it is any softer, like you can press
into the rhizome like a very old potato, then there is probably a rot
or wetness problem.
I hope this helps some.
