Oops, you are giving me credit where credit is not due. I'm not an
expert either. The credit is due to the AIS Board several years ago
when they removed write-in votes as a category for the
Symposium. Obviously, if the AIS Board removed the write-in
category, it was apparent that write-in votes simply had not worked.
I didn't suggest the removal or approve it; I merely reported the
actions from the minutes of the Board meetings. In fact, I used my
write-in privilege over the years but never saw my write-in in print.
I finally woke-up and realized this was an exercise in futility.
To my credit, I did express the doubt that a write-in ever made
it to the top 100.
It doesn't bother me that I have to check little boxes to express
my vote on the Symposium, nor does it bother me that I have to
elect the President of the United States in the same manner. I
recall seeing the results of the 2000 U.S. Presidential election in
the local papers precinct by precinct. There were votes for Elvis
Presley, Mickey Mouse, and Donald Duck to name a few. My
hypothesis is that these people threw away their votes.
