This is what I do mostly. I get seeds, but germination has been less than
satisfactory. Also, it probably would be well to bear in mind what you get
with such a cross. More than half the contributing genes are likely to be
from the TB side. The result of that imbalance is as likely as not to yield
a plant that looks more like a TB than an AB, but without some of the
considered desirable traits that TBs possess. E.g., less branching, lower
bud counts and possibly more temperamental growth habits. One arilbred
breeder I talked to once described them as mostly 'inferior TBs'. Not only
that, the fertility of the resulting plant is diminished to non-existent.
That makes them harder to use in subsequent generations. I've found so far
that this genotype is difficult to cross with another of the same genotype.
I still think it's a worthwhile endeavor - at least so far I haven't given
up on the project. I hope to get plants that display enough fertility to
use them with other ABs and to see if I can achieve plants with durable,
strong growth habits that display a good bit of the aril ancestry in the
look of the bloom. I'm not too concerned with increased bud counts, though
a bit more branching might be nice with the resulting extra blooms that
would provide. I definitely am NOT trying to create TBs with aril markings,
patterns or form. I would like very much to have some of the durability in
plant growth that TBs display.
It's fun. I do it for my own enjoyment. Not too likely I'll ever achieve
anything wonderfully great and even less likely I'd be able to recognize it
if I did. You can certainly get the crosses, but what are your hopes and
aims? What would you enjoy? I plan and expect to grow a whole lot of
disposable iris and have fun doing it and maybe learn some things in the
process.
