<What I want to know is how are you getting your soil temperature
readings? Is there a special thermometer? Do your readings accurately
reflect the temperature of the soil at the depth that the seeds are
planted? Christian, KY>
A couple of years ago, I ordered several soil thermometers. They are
metal with an enclosed dial that's easy to read from a distance. I
forget where I ordered them, but I think it's in the archives (where I
seem to put things about irises in case I forget). I can dig it out for
you if you are interested.
Before I planted the seeds, I checked temperatures at the soil surface,
in pots, and at various depths down to 6 inches or so. Temperatures in
the open (no weeds, sun at least half a day) were quite a bit warmer
than elsewhere, even down to several inches. In the shade, surface
temperatures weren't much different from temperatures down to several
inches. The seeds are in pots in full shade with a lot of reflected
light. I left one thermometer in one of the pots and put another one in
the ground next to the pot (just in case it gets cooler - so far no
difference). In the morning, pot temperatures are a little below
ambient (around 70oF); by late afternoon, pot temperatures are around
80 (air temperatures usually close to 90).
