Just FIDO (forget it and drive on). The leaves on irises are senescent
(dying). That's basically the routine the iris uses to elongate the rhizome.
As the inside leaves grow and mature moving forward, the outside leaves die
off and leave the rhizome longer. All in all a neat way to produce a big fat
stem laying on the ground. Those leaves with the staple holes will die off as
soon as the rhizome produce new growth.

If small holes did significant harm, irises would have been annihilated eons
ago by the insects.

Hmmm...... you make me wonder if the maturing process (from initial growth
until bloom) can be expedited by removing the outside leaves as soon as they
mature. Thanks!
