rhizomes

Hi everyone,
I just joined your chat group because I thought perhaps someone may have had my same experience. I want to dig up my many iris and take them with me on an out-of-state move. I will probably be in a rental before I find permanent residence. How long will the rhizomes last without being planted? Is there some special treatment I can give them to make them last until they are planted? All help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I have had these iris since 1984 and would really hate to lose them or have to say "Good-bye" to them.
Sincerely,
Judy Barber
