Judy, I have had rhizomes survive many months in a paper sack, dug,
dried somewhat and trimmed for sale. They were never picked up, and
sat in the garage until discovered the following July--perhaps an 11
month delay. They all but one survived, and one even bloomed
following planting. TB iris are very tough as long as they are
allowed to go dormant. I DON'T exactly recommend this method,
however.
It may be your best bet to save the most important ones, a fan or two
or three, and POT them in preparation for the move. More weight is
involved, but active growth will continue. This is going to take
some space and add weight to your move, but beats heck out of any
other method, such as farming them out to friends and neighbors to
retrieve later. My experience is that is pretty darned chancy. They
just don't care as much as YOU do, unless it happens to be another
iris fanatic. Labels get mixed up, kids and dogs make a mess of the
beds, etc.
Considering the age of your varieties, have you considered
a "Dealer's Choice" end-of-season order with one of the nurseries,
sent to the new address? Several growers, such as Mid-America, have
done this in the past, and give tremendous value per dollar of quite
new things. Suttons in CA are another supplier who could send you
quite a collection of things economically. Just a thought....
There's been a lot of improvement in the irises in just a few years
lately. You might be ahead to start with new things.
Best on your move,
