I am going to have to weigh in my $.02 with Gerry. Perhaps because it is so
recent for me, but this year I just finished all the requirements to move
from apprentice to recommended for full garden judge. Though all these things
are certainly very valuable: being on this list, reading iris books and
growing and hybridizing: nothing has added as much to my knowledge of iris as
all the judges training and one on one tutoring from knowledgeable and
helpful judges that I received in the past years... NOTHING.
And thank you so much iris judges Ray, Nancy, Mary, Vince, Bruce, Joan,
Charles and so many others...
Perhaps there is something to say in making the standards to retain your
judges status a little higher, but there *are* ongoing requirements to take
and give training as well as other activities. (Continuing to grow iris is
surely the best!)
So, I would have to strongly say that yes, being a fully accredited judge
usually does mean a higher standard for evaluating iris... Not that
non-judges aren't able to, just that there is no way to "weed" out those few
that have learned as much or more than most judges.
