I wish to address both these subjects. Witch's Wand is growing well in
Helena, Montana, Zone 4. It was planted late summer of 2000, it
bloomed well a year ago but this spring it didn't look so good, and no
bloom stocks this year. However, we did have an awful spring, late,
very late, the winter was very dry and we didn't get snow until April
and the trees have suffered from that as well as the drought we've been
going thru. But in the past two months Witch's Wand which is planted
next to my house on the east side looks very healthy and is doing very
well. I expect it will bloom well next spring.
Now on the Master Gardeners. I'm a very proud one. I am a graduate of
the first class in Alaska. The program was conducted at the University
of Alaska-Anchorage by a very capable person, Wayne VanDyre. After our
classroom training, yes we did give back to the community the number of
hours spent in the classroom and much more. We did community school
programs (teaching), filled in at the Extension Service office when
people were on vacation, etc, did office/home calls/ had community
projects where you helped people with a garden project and then
monitored it and wrote reports on it. There are just too many things
that have been done by the Alaska Master Gardeners to list them all.
Wayne went on to establishing a program in Eastern Russia (Siberia) as
well as in Canada. Maybe some areas are not as active but the Alaskans
certainly are and they have earned their title and wear it proudly.

I'm not sure if Calgary AB CA is z3 or z4. It received an outstanding
recommendation from Shauna

Witch's Wand far out performed all of the iris. Major blooms this year
showing non-worse for wear - you would have never known that it has been
through so much. Where other, very established clumps completely rotted
right next to it, Witch's Wand was not affected for some reason.

Here in WI one must do a certain number of community service
hours in a gardening related area to maintain Master
Gardener status (after aforementioned classes). That
*usually* translates to sitting at garden centers once a
month giving advice as to plat Identification or offering up
why something is sick or has died . . . . the best one I
came in contact with was the man who planted his strawberry
plants with the foliage in the ground and the roots upright,
wondering why they were dying . . . . .
