CULT: rhizome size, West Coast monsters


	Every year we get discussion on the relative sizes of rhizomes and
the Giant West Coast Rhizome syndrome. One factor I think we can rule out is
the amount of water. Certainly Iris grown in Oregon get plenty. Here in
California I see little difference between those growing in relatively dry
soil and those in my perennial beds which are regularly irrigated. Regular
irrigation does make the leaves look better....Factors which greatly effect
rhizome size are soil fertility and sun exposure. Iris which get shade are
smaller than those in full sun. Our growing season is nearly year round
because of moderate temps in winter and summer. My guess would be that West
Coast Rhizomes are larger because of the longer growing season - not because
they are 'full of water'...
