Re: Cult:, Ref: Iris Mulch Study- speaking of that bulletin

Christian,

I would say that the difference is noticed between an established fan/clump of iris, and the newly transplants that you have just moved. I brought the whole batch of IB's back from our plant sale in June just so I could re-identify them next spring. It has been one month, and all the leaves yellowed and have now died back, but there are new fans coming up through that.

If you have yellowing leaves on your established fans (like from last year's planting) I would guess that you would then have nitrogen shortage. I don't have that problem, I think, because of the icky alfalfa that I mulched with last year. . . if anything I have ROT! :-(

Bo,

yep, that's the one. I found it when I was looking for something else I had
remembered reading. Of course it looks like Betty has decided that that
article is hooey for her anyway... lol.

In that same Bulletin there's a blurb about soil micronutrient deficiencies.
Skimming through the chart of symptoms I spy a few things in my garden that
may indicate one deficiency or the other. Too bad there weren't any
pictures with that article. But does anyone know the difference between say
the yellowed leaves that indicate a nitrogen shortage and the 'distressed'
look that goes along with dividing/moving rhizomes?

All of my plants have just been moved, one way or other. I expect them to
look stressed, so what is not typical stress?
