RE: Database for Tracking Irises

I use Excel. I know it isn't a true database but it works for me. I have
columns for everything I am interested in. Name, desc, year of intro,
breeder/hybridizer, height, when it blooms, is it a space ager, does it
rebloom, what type of iris is it, where I got it, when I got it, location,
and so on and so forth. I use mail merge to print labels. I print right
straight out of excel for everything else. I can sort this by any of those
columns, add a column, delete a column or search by a word or phrase. Works
for me.

Jean, I use MS Access, and have set up an entry page so I can enter data
from
either catalogs or the AIS R&I's and Check Lists. I don't know if the file
that creates the entry page and the file that creates the data page in the
data base would be transferable. I suspect it would. You would have to
have
either MS Office or at least Access and Word to use this, however.

I have to go to MS Word and use "Mail Merge" to print from the Access file,
which requires me to think harder than I want to on just what to do next to
get the results I want. The end result looks great--and I can select fields
to print that would give a list of names, or a list with originator's name
or
whatever. The process is very flexible, but requires enough attention and
thought that would give most of us a headache.

You might find something simpler to use, but I'd be happy to share what I
have
if you're interested.
