Re: Pedigree Analysis -- was Database for Tracking Irises

To Char,

You asked:

"Someone who knows more about pedigrees in flowers than I do could respond
to
this. How important is the pedigree say 5 generations back. Is it
critical?"

This is just my opinion, but I think any information, as far back as you
can go, can be extremely valuable. Often knowing what an original species
ancestor was can tell a lot. I'm not the expert with Iris, but just as in
animals and humans, you can follow inherited traits through the
generations, and see patterns, learn more about how these genetic traits
work, and can often predict where they might turn up when it isn't apparent
from just looking at the individuals. It can give you some good clues as
to what might give interesting results when you are hybridizing.

For some people's purposes just the parents is enough, but for others I
suspect that every detail that can be learned, all the way back to the
start, is very important indeed.

Dave
