There were a lot of hybrid bearded irises with pbf before I. aphylla was brought into the gene pool, the source of which was almost undoubtedly I. variegata, most clones of which I am familiar with express pbf. That is not to say that I. aphylla did not also contribute to pbf in modern hybrids (and it is almost certainly a source of high bud count, too).

I. pallida is about the least likely source of pbf, though I have noticed a slight and transient flush of pbf at the base of the new leaves of I. pallida 'Argentea' in early spring. I am not aware that any of the "original" tetraploid TB's (Ii. cypriana, mesopotamica, trojana, etc.) express pbf.
