The Mio Irisarians, an Affiliate of The American Iris Society, held their 61st Annual Iris Show at Word of Life Baptist Church in Alpena, MI, on June 18, 2005. There were a total of 28 participants in the show from the areas of Alpena, Lachine, Hale, Mio, Hillman, Millersburg, Onaway, Luzerne, and Bridgeport. 321 iris stalks were presented in the show, representing 251 varieties in 5 different categories of the iris species. Well over 300 visitors came to the show, and enjoyed the single stalks of iris, as well as 15 floral arrangements focusing on the iris.
Best Specimen of Show in the Adult Division was the Tall Bearded iris HER KINGDOM, grown by Kris Sorgenfrei of Millersburg. Six Runners-up for the Best of Show Award were GLADYS AUSTIN and LACY SNOWFLAKE, both TB iris also grown by Kris Sorgenfrei of Millersburg, CHINOOK WINDS, TB iris grown by Del Gifford of Luzerne, ALONE AT LAST, TB iris grown by Mary McDonald of Lachine, BRIDAL ICING and WINDJAMMER SEAS, both TB iris grown by Adam Cordes of Hillman. The award for the exhibitor receiving the most first-place (blue) ribbons, known as the Silver Medal, went to Kris Sorgenfrei of Millersburg. Award for the Bronze Medal (second-most first-place ribbons) went to Dolores Meinzinger of Lachine. Best Seedling of Show and an Exhibition Certificate went to the Tall Bearded iris seedling, B117A, originated by Paul Black of Keizer, Oregon, and grown by Adam Cordes of Hillman.
Every year at our show, visitors are given a ballot on which to vote for their favorite iris of the show, known as the People's Choice award. This year, the TB iris STARSHIP ENTERPRIZE grown by Kris Sorgenfrei received that award.
Other winners in the Adult Division are Virginia Copas, Kim Kocher, Shirley and Dave Kzinowek, and Agnes Kozak, all from Hale, MI, Opal Fullerton, Kathy Goeke, and Jean Henry from Alpena, Carol Fisher of Mio, Ruth Gifford, Tom and Ruth Leach, from Luzerne, Kay and Bernie McInnes of Onaway, Diana Edgar from Hillman, and Mary Leach from Bridgeport. CONGRATULATIONS!
Our show contained an amazing number of youth participants, as well! Seven young people under the age 19 entered a total of 39 iris specimens from their gardens. Best Specimen of the Youth Division went to the Tall Bearded iris LORILEE, grown by Abby Tongue (10) of Alpena. This year was her very first show. Six runners-up for Best of Show, Youth Division, were CONJURATION, Space-Age iris, and HIGH PROFILE, TB iris both grown by Sam Gartner (7) of Alpena, RED HAWK and MISSION RIDGE, both TB iris grown by Luke Dreyer (13) of Lachine, TRIPLE WHAMMY, Space-Age iris grown by Laura Dreyer (11) of Lachine, and DOROTHEA K. WILLIAMSON, a Louisiana iris grown by Sarah Dreyer (15) of Lachine. Winner of the Silver Medal in the Youth Division was Samuel Gartner of Alpena, and winner of the Bronze Medal in the Youth Division was Luke Dreyer of Lachine. Other winners in the Youth Division were Danielle Meinzinger (12) of Lachine, and Sapphire Krist (11) of Alpena.
The theme for the Artistic Division of our show was "Holidays of the Year." There were 15 beautiful floral arrangements on display, with Dolores Meinzinger of Lachine winning the Best Design of the Artistic Division. Dolores also won other awards, including and People's Choice for her arrangement in the "Father's Day" category and the Artistic Sweepstakes award for most first-place ribbons in the Artistic Section. Congratulations to everyone's creativity in the Artistic Division!
Judges at our show were Cliff Wilde of St. Clair Shores, Don Sorenson of Greenville, and Charlotte Dashner of Novi.
Visitors came from Alpena, Rogers City, Oscoda, Harrisville, Millersburg, Traverse City, Roscommon, Alger, Grand Rapids, Saginaw, Flint, Rochester, and St. Clair Shores. Out-of-state visitors were from Pennsylvania, Colorado, Wisconsin, Ohio, Kentucky, South Carolina, and Florida.
