Re: HYB: PBF history?

Hello Steve,
There's a boatload of old posts on the subject of PBF
(purple-based-foliage) - you can read them by using
the search feature at the archives. It seems from the
posts I've looked at, that most people mention Iris
variegata and Iris aphylla as the contributors of PBF
to the gene pool. From what I've read there aren't any
"pure" Iris pallida clones that have PBF. But I can
tell you this, it must have genes that contribute to
greater expression of PBF. I used ROSEMARY'S DREAM a
miniature tall bearded which has PBF, to pollinate an
Iris pallida clone called KUPARI (which has no PBF).
Those seedlings with PBF, all expressed it much more
than their pollen parent.
So, it wouldn't surprise me if some ancestor of the
modern irises had very minimal (hardly noticeable) PBF
that was brought out by combination with pallida
genes.
Does anyone know if any of the founding Middle Eastern
tetraploids had faint PBF?
Tom
