Dave,
I haven't actually tallied up any numbers for the
groups [of seedlings] I have that are segregating out
for PBF [purple based foliage], so I probably
shouldn't even say anything about it. But I can't help
myself sometimes. So here goes...
It seems to me that in the diploids, that there aren't
enough PBF seedlings in the populations I've grown,
for it to be simply one locus with a dominant gene for
PBF and a recessive one for no-PBF. If that were the
case, I would expect 50% PBF and 50% non-PBF from a
cross of a non-PBF X heterozygous PBF -- and I don't
think that's what I'm getting. For example, CLOWN
PANTS is non-PBF and as you'd expect both of its
parents were non-PBF. When I've pollinated it with
ROSEMARY'S DREAM, which has PBF (but will produce
non-PBF seedlings also), I get both PBF and non-PBF
seedlings -- as expected. But... there are definitely
A LOT less than 50% PBF. Without counting I'd
guess-timate, 4 or 5 PBF out of 40 or 50 seedlings
total. The same goes for KUPARI (non-PBF) pollinated
by ROSEMARY'S DREAM (PBF). Guess-timating again, I'd
say maybe 8 or 9 PBF out of 40 or 50 seedlings total.
So maybe in some crosses it would work out to be
50/50, but in most of the crosses I've been noticing a
different ratio. If it were simply one locus with a
dominant gene for PBF, half of the seedlings from
these two crosses should be PBF. What does this
suggest? I'm not sure exactly, but one thing that
comes to mind, is that maybe there is another locus
involved. Maybe a locus with a dominant inhibitor, or
something of that nature. I guess, first of all, I'll
have to get busy (busier) and actually count some of
these guys.
Later, Tom
