Roundup only works on plant material through the leaves and it  neutralizes 
when it hits the soil. I use it al the time on new beds. I use Poast  on 
grasses already growing in established beds. Although Poast was taken off the  
market 7 years ago I was lucky enough to find a 2 1/2 gallon container of it in  an 
out of the way farm supply store. And, yes, it still works!
Ornamec is another grass specific chemical that you can use in flower beds  
to kill grass.
It may be Poast under another name. I use Stinger for broad leaf weeds and  
Basagran for nut grass and some broad leaf weeds. The older I get, the more I  
use sprays. My back sure appreciates it! LOL
