Char, I've been told that Roundup only effects the plants. That it is  
neutral once it hits the soil.  Last year I used roundup before planting in  one bed 
and around seedlings in another with no visible ill  effect.  Soon as I get a 
dry morning I'll be spraying another tilled  bed.  
 
Last year, I thought there was a problem using preen in two of the  seedling 
beds, I'm not so sure now.  This year's seedling beds were  planted 2-3 weeks 
apart and the first one, planted in late May, is growing  much better than the 
later one.  May be enough to equal the difference last  year.  Still not 
sure.  It's so hot & humid that I've been afraid  to apply fertilizer as I did 
last year.  Still, they are growing pretty  well after the rains.
