RE: OT New Iris bed

In addition to Roundup esential becoming inactive when touching soil is the fact that iris plants are generally not killed by roundup unless they are allready in a weakened condition. It will discolour and distort the flower but the plant survives. I have tried to kill off iris plants in a discarded field only to have all the weeds disappear and many iris plants survive very well. Other people have experienced the same thing. A well know grower recomended to me to spay everything with round up in the fall when growth slows down. He swore by it but I never had the courage to try it directly on the plants but only aaround them. Young seedlings seem to be efected , but mature and healthy plants seem to survive an accidental spaying quite well.

Round up is permited by the agricultural department as a treatment two weeks before harvest of crops such as soy beans for human consumption. In this case it ensures even ripening of seeds at the same time and increases yield.
