REF: a new word
New word for today - necrotrophic.
Erwinia (soft rot bacterium) is necrotrophic, which means it can't live
off of live tissue, but can kill it and then live on the dead tissue.
Which explains why it is such a problem after nasty late freezes - gets
started on all the dead and damaged tissue, then easily starts killing
healthy tissue.
Also explains why removing existing rot is important.
Ran across another rot article that says that genetic resistance is the
key to preventing rot. Like we didn't already know that...
Some current research to insert rot resistant genes from other species
into agricultural crops.
