Re: HYB: REB: Oz, pH, survival

I thought Ann sent us a table or list that showed some cultivars reported reblooming at low pH, others at high (neutral), and some at both. But maybe I'm not remembering that right.

I haven't tried to grow either AUTUMN TRYST or DOUBLE SHOT - both are plicata, not a group that appeals to me much, either as a garden bloom or for hybridizing.

Yet. :-)

ROSALIE FIGGE behaved the same for me - frozen out spring and fall, didn't fall bloom until after some cool weather, declined until it was down to a few nubbins, at which point I tossed it. I wonder if she would have enjoyed more lime?

Betty, if your STAR GATE does indeed have both CA and Region 7 everbloom capability, it may become a 'benchmark' breeder <g>

I better go see if it has survived all the wretched weather this year. We finally got some drizzly humid weather this week, and I noticed it pushed a few more cultivars over the edge (i.e., soft rot), including one in a pot of dirty perlite that I <thought> was going to do well here. :-(

But with those genes, STAR GATE is probably doing well.

As for IMM form etc - she's definitely not a predictable parent. Some crosses have produced nothing but weedy foliage with few stalks and very small retro blooms - as if the genes that survive here are the ones from the dwarf ancestry. But others are pretty good (i.e., the CELEBRATION SONG cross). By 'pretty good', I mean an improvement over her form, substance, and bloom habit. Next year will probably give me some idea how bad/good the next generation will look.

I'm not ready to give up on getting a good mix from her just yet.
