CULT: rain
We are finally getting the rain for which we have waited all summer. A hard
thunderstorm depositing more than an inch about 2 p.m., followed by a steady
rain since. We have been down 5 1/2 inches here. Just in time. County
authorities were discussing restricting water use, which would have been bad
news for the seedlings. They were planted when the temperature was between 95
and 102. I lost large numbers of the first couple of hundred planted, despite
watering when planted and a soaking of the beds the following early morning,
with deep watering every 3 days following. Some crosses were hit much harder
than others. I haven't yet had time to chart out the losses, but they were
mostly SDBs. I think the real culprit was too much sand in the top layer of
soil. At this point, their roots have reached down to the good stuff and
they're doing all right. -- Griff
