Joe Mertzweiller, "Mr. Louisiana Iris", passed away last Thursday at his home
in Baton Rouge. Joe had a lifelong interest in Louisiana Iris and served as
president of the Society for Louisiana Iris, and the Louisiana Society for
Horticultural Research.
Joe Mertzweiller developed more than two dozen named varieties and was
awarded the DeBaillon Medal for the development of the tetraploid Louisiana
iris from the American Iris Society.
