I recently ran across some information about environmental impact ratings for
pesticides - not sure how valid it is out of context (fruit production) but
they don't allow use of pyrethrins. I don't know which of the ratings
criteria pyrethrins fail, but I wondered if perhaps pyrethrins fell out of
favor with home gardeners as some of these problems became recognized.
The ratings criteria include toxicity to people, toxicity to key natural
enemies [I assume these are bug enemies, not people enemies!], selectivity,
toxicity to other natural organisms, persistence, pollution of ground and
surface water, necessity of use, ability to stimulate pests [sounds like
Dennis has seen this], lack of information.
General pesticides rating listing
Not permitted
pyrethroid insecticides and acaricides
non-naturally occurring plant growth regulators
organochlorine insecticides and acaricides
toxic, water polluting or very persistent herbicides
Permitted with Restrictions
benzimidazole fungicides
dithiocarbamate fungicides (maximum of 3 applications per season and not
in succession) so that predatory mites are not affected
sulfur (use must be limited so that predatory Phytoseeid mites are not
affected)
residual herbicides, except toxic, water polluting or very persistent
products
