I think that depth of planting affects bloom time for types of plants.  I =
did a similar experiment with tulips.  I planted six inches deeper than =
recommended and bloom is about 10 days later.  Other factors are sun/shade, =
=
hot/cold.  Those that are planted in more shade bloom later and those =
planted close to the house (more heat) bloom sooner.

One of my stated goals of gardening is extended bloom and I would like
to report on a little experiment I conducted to do just that. I divided
a large clump of 'Iapetus' into 5 divisions last fall. I planted 2 as
usual with the crown about 1" below the soil surface. One was planted
higher and two deeper, with standing water over them for most of the
winter. The one that was planted higher heaved over winter and I
replanted it in the spring and it bloomed nicely, along with the two
planted as usual. The two plants that were planted deeper were slower to
emerge. I had almost given one up for dead.  But eventually, it grew and
bloomed 3 weeks later than the control plants. I will take notes for
another year on this planting.

I intend to run some similar tests with other cultivars this year as
they are lifted and divided.
