Rusty -- Sorry this reply is a bit late. I've been off-line, off-kilter
and off my feet for a few days with a back strain, which is now much
improved. Thought you might like to know a few things about your fringe
tree-to-be. I have one (virginicus) that I planted about 20 years ago in
good soil in the sun. It is about 12 ft high and the same wide. It is
the very last to green in the spring. It greens so late that I am sure
some gardeners have tossed the tree, thinking it was dead. But have
faith. It leafs first, then blossoms. The bunches of long, white
cord-like strands perfume the entire yard with a fragrance akin to
vanilla. A few years ago, my tree was beginning to overhang and crowd
the sidewalk, so I mentioned to some of my neighbors who plod by with
their briefcases to and from the bus stop that I was going to prune it
back. To a person, they protested, saying they'd much rather detour
around it that lose any of its fragrance. So, that's what you can
expect.

Jefferson liked the fringe tree and grew it at Monticello. I'd better
send this right now -- we're getting the thundertsorm we've been waiting
for.
