As I read the none-too-eloquent schematic drawing done by the author, the
"claw" of the standard is that area of the midrib toward the base of the
standard. That is, the bottom center where it thickens and attatches to, or
grasps, if you prefer, the base. This is not a term I have encountered
elsewhere.
