Japanese iris

Is it too much to ask serious lovers of iris to use the word Japanese
instead of "Jap"?
If you were speaking of Hispanic iris would you say "spic"? If African
would you say "nigger"? To many people, certainly to Japanese, "jap" is in
the same category. If you are too lazy to spell out the word, JA is
understood and inoffensive.
For the record, I am a veteran of WW II. What's your excuse?
