OT-CHAT: Marijuana and Cleome

Oh, boy. Remember a few weeks back when the OT Chat topic was legal plants
that resemble the demon weed? Well, Tuesday's Arkansas Democrat Gazette
"Paper Trails" column carries an account of marijuana misidentification
that's smack on-topic with that off-topic chatter of ours. Here's the
entire item, in its graceless originality:

"Folks in Camden know Master Gardener Thera Lou Adams.
"I'm pretty fiery, particularly when it comes to my flowers," Adams says.
Especially the big bed of flowers she and friends have planted for the city
just behind the Camden News building. But it seems not everyone cares for
the flowers as much as Adams.
"This lady and I kept saying, 'What's happening to our plants?' "
The cleomes, or spider plants that happen to look like marijuana, disappeared.
"They do favor marijuana," Adams says. So she thought the people pulling
the plants were "those crazy children who think it's marijuana."
Instead it was Ouachita County Sheriff Ben Garner who, in a case of
mistaken identity, pulled the plants he thought were marijuana.
"I did what I thought was right," he told the Camden News.
Then he learned he was wrong.
"He was so humble," Adams says. "He said, 'Oh, Miss Adams, I wouldn't do
anyhting to hurt you. I've seen how hard you work down there.' "
Although the sheriff did quite a bit of damage to the bed, and this is a
particularly difficult time of year to grow anything, Adams says, "It's
hilarious."
She adds, "But if you see the sheriff out by the hill, call me."
